As Christians, this word may be used by us almost all the time especially when we find ourselves in church or any other Christian gathering. However, do we know what it really entails to have someone boldly utter such words? What does it mean for one to say they’re born again? Is it that they happen to miraculously re-enter the wombs of their mothers and emerge out once more as new borns or what? What is it really about being a born again Christian….
Our answer to all these will not be farfetched I tell you. We are going to dig deep into the whole issue of one becoming born again and what this really represents in general to the person and the Christian faith in general.
Being born again is another means of saying one has been set free and is a new creation. It’s the acceptance one decides to take in order to fully build their faith and trust in Christ. And one needs not literally enter their mother’s womb once more before they can attain this level. It’s about being renewed spiritually and wholeheartedly, and not by the flesh. Jesus Christ clearly explains this to us all when he answered Nicodemus. John 3:3-7(KJV)….. ‘ Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus saith unto him, how can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.’
One does not necessarily emerge out of a mother’s womb before this can come to pass. The bible says that it is a requirement which is needed before one enters the kingdom of heaven. Now in becoming born again, there are certain steps necessary that one must take without which they cannot really pry themselves of being born again wholly.
First of all, there’s the need to repent from ones sinful ways and acknowledge acceptance of the fact that they have sinned against God and against themselves. Therefore are prepared to turn away from all of these negatives and a consequent repentance and renewal of the heart to do that which is right and in accordance with the will of God.
Secondly, one needs to receive the gift of salvation and eternal life which lies in believing in God and his only begotten son for whom was sent to die on the cross of Calvary just to save us. He was tortured and humiliated just for our sake and bore all these pain and hurt so we could be set free. Therefore once we get to accept him into our hearts, automatically we become free and renewed spiritually. Our whole being testifies to this renewal of mind, body and soul.
Being born again does not require one to undergo strict rules and adherence of which some think is the case and due to this fact would want none of this transformation. It’s got to do with the kind of relationship one wants to build with Christ. A complete turnaround from ones past life which was sinful, but with the decision and mindset to put all that behind and turn over a new life in Christ Jesus. Salvation is available unto us all, and the bible says that we all need to work earnestly towards building our salvation. The lord might have sent his son to come die for us, and he has done his part. The rest is left for us to accomplish by accepting him now into our hearts and into our lives, realizing the love he has for us and doing according to his will and ways. 2 Corinthians 5:17(KJV) – Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new. We become new creatures when we decide to have a relationship with God. He picks us up from the dirt, and cleans us as good as new. He doesn’t use our past against us…., no he doesn’t. He reminds us of the good that lies in us and makes us want to become better people. That’s how God is like. Salvation is the key! You need to go through that process of being renewed. Your faith in Christ Jesus should be seen evidenced in your deeds and ways. If we say we are truly born again, then it must show in whatever it is we do here on earth. We need to impact our lives positively so it touches others to also want to join in the good life that we’ve found in Jesus. God and his kingdom will be far away from us if we decide not to turn off from our sinful ways, accepting him fully into our lives and serving him. He rightfully said it in his words that, except a man be born of by water and by spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven. This is to mean that, one needs to undergo that very important transformation of being baptized with water and a purification of the soul.
So many times do we hear people getting all confused about the whole issue of becoming born again in Christ Jesus, truly and genuinely? We seem to lack certain vital backings of the word of God when it comes to this subject and I do pray that this little enlightenment of the scriptures say on this issue will better set your minds at rest and help you in getting closer to Christ as well as being able to have that compact relationship with him. By his grace we all have been set free and saved, but before he can complete his mission in our lives, we need to invite him into our hearts and what better way can we do this but by accepting him as our lord and savior. Now if you out there and you still haven’t given your life to Christ, but wish to do so now, I want to share a little prayer with you. This is to confirm your acceptance of Christ Jesus into your life and into your heart and saying that you truly want to get to know him more and build a relationship with him. Say these words after me…
‘Lord Jesus, today I come to you with true humility and sincerity. I accept that you are my lord and savior. For you sent your one and only true son, Jesus, to come and die on the cross of Calvary just for my sake. For that bloodshed, my sins have been forgiven. I am honored and blessed to be favored by you. But for the sinner that I am, you still love me and protect me. Your grace has set me free. The blood on the cross has washed me clean. No more will I go back to my sinful ways dear lord. I want to know you. I want to have a relationship with you. This day I give my life to you. I say thank you for accepting me.’
If you’ve said these words, this day your new life in Christ begins. Believe that he’s with you no matter what with you. Get ready to encounter a memorable and loving relationship with him. Your past is gone and dead. The new you starts living from today. You are set free in Jesus name.
