Is Gambling a Sin

Gambling…..quite a habit most people seem to have out there huh? But as to whether gambling is a sin or not is still unclear till date and it is most likely to have more Christians partaking in this practice also, just because the bible does not really say anything specifically about this habit. Most people tend to hide behind the fact that since gambling is not pin pointed single handedly in the bible as being sinful, they can practice it and assume it being ok just to feel good about themselves. Now how true is this assertion? Well, anyhow you look at it I’ve got news for you all out there who seem to be in too deep on this habit. You don’t really know what you getting yourself involved in because you simply refuse to understand the voice of God on this issue, which isn’t really the best thing to do. In as much as people tend to deny the fact that they are caught up in some kind of evil habit they just can’t seem to deal with or get rid of, they prefer to live in a state of denial.

The word gambling might not be found in the bible, yes…but that should never lead us into assuming it’s not a sin in entirety now should we? If that’s the case then we might as well consider sinful acts such as the abuse of drugs, masturbation and watching of pornography as not being sinful, but we all do agree that they are sins anyway whiles their not in any way sited in the bible straightforward wise. So where then does that place gambling? If you don’t know I’ll tell you….

Is Gambling a Sin? Point 1

Gambling is very much a sin like any other negative habit we practice which goes against the word of God and our living principles in general. The bible gives certain strict warnings with regards to the way and manner with which we let money control our lives. We are encouraged to stay away from any effort in getting rich the easy way, i.e.;’ the get rich quick’ method often employed by most people in their bid to make it in life..1 Timothy 6:10 (KJV)’ for the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows’. For the love of money one may be tempted into doing so many things just so they could satisfy that urge, and that’s exactly what gambling does. It focuses on ones love for money and the ways and means possible for these means to be met at all cost.

Is Gambling a Sin? Point 2

While the bible does not explicitly mention the name ‘gambling’, the mention of the events of casting lots which can be equated to pure luck or chance is made evident.

is gambling a sin

Is it a sin to gamble

Let’s take the instance of casting lots in the bible where we see in book of Leviticus of this process used in the selection or choosing of the sacrificial goat over the scapegoat, or the instance where the apostles had to cast lots in determining the replacement for Judas, and even in the case of Joshua who had to cast lots in order to determine the allotment of lands to the various tribes. All these instances go to show the word of God on the basis of one coming into terms with being lucky or being favored by chance. It’s not about one blowing away fast money only in the hope of getting lucky in claiming it all back…it’s not at all the case.

Is Gambling a Sin ? Point 3

Luring people to take their hard earned income is a sin. Casinos make use of all kinds of tricky schemes in order to entice and lure their victims unto the gamble tables, where they get to throw away all of the money they’ve worked so hard to earn go down the drain in just one night. These schemes as it may interest you to know often come in the form of free offers being made through alcoholic beverages or inexpensive items on offer in their bid to make as much money as possible from people which leads to one loosing focus on the game as a result of being drunk, and losing out in the end. They never seem to offer anything worthwhile to anyone except for unnecessary and empty pleasures. They put one to the test knowing fully well that their chances of winning are quite in fact very slim and limited.

So then I am forced to ask the question as to why people would prefer to use all that they have only to satisfy their worldly pleasures whereas there are countless number of people out there needing certain life essentials and vitals in order to survive. And yet we claim we are Christians? How do we feel knowing that our deeds draw us further away from God? [Let your] conversation [be] without covetousness; [and be] content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee….Hebrews 13:5 is a direction for man to follow at all times.

Is Gambling a Sin? Point 4

Greediness is a sin, and that’s the basis people use to gamble.  By using little money to gain more of someone else’s. The lord says we should ask whatever it is that our heart desires, and those things we shall ask will be given unto us. We are not supposed to act all greedy and self-seeking. Money is evil in all entirety, and man’s life should never depend on whether they have it or not. Some go to the pint of engaging in the habit of gambling and end up losing their lives or taking that of another. Luke 16:13… ‘No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon’. You cannot serve God and yet still be a servant to money! It doesn’t work that way. It’s totally sinful and that’s that. There’s no sugar coating the practice of gamble. How do you expect to give your life to Christ when you have decided to go in pursuit of worldly and material things? Is this the right path to take as a Christian…, I don’t know about you all, but let’s not reduce ourselves to the mere form of becoming slaves to money and all of its diabolic deeds. It is clearly stated in the bible according to the book of Philippians 4:19 that the lord will provide all of our needs according to his riches. He is our all in all. Without him we are nothing and with him, we’ve got everything we ever could dream of having in this life.

Gambling has no place in the life of a Christian. If you live your life based on the principles of man, you will never have that intimate relationship you always dream to have with Christ. Our lives must not be based on following the orders of others blindly. If society wishes to see gambling as a good in itself and in so doing pry itself with its consequent practice, then let it be. But we as christens, won’t level our strong Christian morals and values for nothing. Let’s set our territory. Let’s distinguish ourselves from others. Do not let sin draw you away into an eternal fire of condemnation. Just think things through and if in any way you happen to violate the word of God by engaging yourself in this act, it’s not too late to turn over a new leaf. It’s possible to set yourself free and step out of these mangled chains you’ve been wrapped in. God can forgive you. Just draw closer to him and let it all go. If he’s done it for several people out there, he can do it for you too. Just believe in that.
